Counselling V Coaching

Counselling and coaching are similar because of the following:

  • both want to help you create a life you feel better about

  • both create an atmosphere of trust, non judgement and support

  • both help you identify what is holding you back

  • both focus around good listening

  • both help you to be more resilient

  • both want you to find your own answers that work for you

  • both can help you identify and work towards life goals

  • both help you with identifying core beliefs and changing your perspective

  • both have the goal of helping you reach your potential

  • both encourage self-discovery.

The differences between counselling and coaching are:

  • counselling is coping orientated/coaching is action orientated

  • counsellors want to help you realise how you feel/coaches want to help you recognise what you think

  • counselling helps you recognise and solve your problems in life/coaching helps you set and achieve goals

  • counselling is there to support you with empathy and understanding /coaching frequently challenges you

  • counselling is focused on helping you be at peace with yourself and your life/coaching focuses on your potential

How do I know which one to choose?

It depends on your personal preference.

The objectives of counselling are to help people in addressing and resolving problems that make them feel bad emotionally. If you are curious about breaking patterns of thinking and acting that have been plaguing your life for some time, want to feel understood and understand yourself at last and would like to raise your self-esteem then counselling might be a good choice.

The basic presumption of coaching is that coaching clients are in a good place mentally and emotionally, and ready to receive guidance on how to make changes that will help them in achieving their goal. If you only want to focus on what you are dealing with right now, don’t want someone to ask you anything too personal, want help making action steps then coaching might be a good choice.
